Little-Known U.S. Document - The Early America Review, Summer 1997

Little-Known U.S. Document - The Early America Review, Summer 1997

Little-Known U.S. Document Signed by President Adams Proclaims America's Government Is Secular

by Jim Walker

Some people today assert that the United States government came from Christian foundations. They argue that our political system represents a Christian ideal form of government and that Jefferson, Madison, et al, had simply expressed Christian values while framing the Constitution. If this proved true, then we should have a wealth of evidence to support it, yet just the opposite proves the case.

Although, indeed, many of America's colonial statesmen practiced Christianity, our most influential Founding Fathers broke away from traditional religious thinking. The ideas of the Great Enlightenment that began in Europe had begun to sever the chains of monarchical theocracy. These heretical European ideas spread throughout early America. Instead of relying on faith, people began to use reason and science as their guide. The humanistic philosophical writers of the Enlightenment, such as Locke, Rousseau, and Voltaire, had greatly influenced our Founding Fathers and Isaac Newton's mechanical and mathematical foundations served as a grounding post for their scientific reasoning.

A few Christian fundamentalists attempt to convince us to return to the Christianity of early America, yet according to the historian, Robert T. Handy, "No more than 10 percent-- probably less-- of Americans in 1800 were members of congregations."

The Founding Fathers, also, rarely practiced Christian orthodoxy. Although they supported the free exercise of any religion, they understood the dangers of religion. Most of them believed in deism and attended Freemasonry lodges. According to John J. Robinson, "Freemasonry had been a powerful force for religious freedom." Freemasons took seriously the principle that men should worship according to their own conscious. Masonry welcomed anyone from any religion or non-religion, as long as they believed in a Supreme Being. Washington, Franklin, Hancock, Hamilton, Lafayette, and many others accepted Freemasonry.

The Constitution reflects our founders views of a secular government, protecting the freedom of any belief or unbelief. The historian, Robert Middlekauff, observed, "the idea that the Constitution expressed a moral view seems absurd. There were no genuine evangelicals in the Convention, and there were no heated declarations of Christian piety."

TREATY OF TRIPOLI 1797 SPELLS OUT THE US IS NOT A CHRSITIAN NATION

"Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

signed by President John Adams.

Our Founding Fathers Were NOT Christians

Our Founding Fathers Were NOT Christians: "One of the most common statements from the 'Religious Right' is that they want this country to 'return to the Christian principles on which it was founded'. However, one only needs to do a little research into American history to discover that this statement is a lie. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States had little use for Christianity, and many were strongly opposed to it. They were men of The Enlightenment, not Men of Christianity. They were Deists.
When the Founders wrote the nation's Constitution, they specified that 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.' (Article 6, section 3) This provision was radical in its day-- giving equal citizenship to believers and non-believers alike. They wanted to ensure that no single religion could make the claim of being the official, national religion, such as England had. Nowhere in the Constitution does it mention religion, except in exclusionary terms. The words Jesus Christ, Christianity, Bible, and God are never mentioned in the Constitution. "

"The Christian right is trying to rewrite the history of the United States as part of its campaign to force its religion on others. They try to depict the founding fathers as pious Christians who wanted the United States to be a Christian nation, with laws that favored Christians and Christianity.

This is patently untrue. The early presidents and patriots were generally Deists or Unitarians, believing in some form of impersonal Providence but rejecting the divinity of Jesus and the absurdities of the Old and New testaments.

Thomas Paine was a pamphleteer whose manifestos encouraged the faltering spirits of the country and aided materially in winning the war of Independence: I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of...Each of those churches accuse the other of unbelief; and for my own part, I disbelieve them all." From: The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine, pp. 8,9 (Republished 1984, Prometheus Books, Buffalo, NY)

George Washington, the first president of the United States, never declared himself a Christian according to contemporary reports or in any of his voluminous correspondence. Washington Championed the cause of freedom from religious intolerance and compulsion. When John Murray (a universalist who denied the existence of hell) was invited to become an army chaplain, the other chaplains petitioned Washington for his dismissal. Instead, Washington gave him the appointment. On his deathbed, Washinton uttered no words of a religious nature and did not call for a clergyman to be in attendance. From: George Washington and Religion by Paul F. Boller Jr., pp. 16, 87, 88, 108, 113, 121, 127 (1963, Southern Methodist University Press, Dallas, TX)

John Adams, the country's second president, was drawn to the study of law but faced pressure from his father to become a clergyman. He wrote that he found among the lawyers 'noble and gallant achievments" but among the clergy, the "pretended sanctity of some absolute dunces". Late in life he wrote: "Twenty times in the course of my late reading, have I been upon the point of breaking out, "This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it!"

It was during Adam's administration that the Senate ratified the Treaty of Peace and Friendship, which states in Article XI that "the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion." From: The Character of John Adams by Peter Shaw, pp. 17 (1976, North Carolina Press, Chapel Hill, NC) Quoting a letter by JA to Charles Cushing Oct 19, 1756, and John Adams, A Biography in his Own Words, edited by James Peabody, p. 403 (1973, Newsweek, New York NY) Quoting letter by JA to Jefferson April 19, 1817, and in reference to the treaty, Thomas Jefferson, Passionate Pilgrim by Alf Mapp Jr., pp. 311 (1991, Madison Books, Lanham, MD) quoting letter by TJ to Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse, June, 1814.

Thomas Jefferson, third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, said:"I trust that there is not a young man now living in the United States who will not die a Unitarian." He referred to the Revelation of St. John as "the ravings of a maniac" and wrote: The Christian priesthood, finding the doctrines of Christ levelled to every understanding and too plain to need explanation, saw, in the mysticisms of Plato, materials with which they might build up an artificial system which might, from its indistinctness, admit everlasting controversy, give employment for their order, and introduce it to profit, power, and pre-eminence. The doctrines which flowed from the lips of Jesus himself are within the comprehension of a child; but thousands of volumes have not yet explained the Platonisms engrafted on them: and for this obvious reason that nonsense can never be explained." From: Thomas Jefferson, an Intimate History by Fawn M. Brodie, p. 453 (1974, W.W) Norton and Co. Inc. New York, NY) Quoting a letter by TJ to Alexander Smyth Jan 17, 1825, and Thomas Jefferson, Passionate Pilgrim by Alf Mapp Jr., pp. 246 (1991, Madison Books, Lanham, MD) quoting letter by TJ to John Adams, July 5, 1814.

"The day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter." -- Thomas Jefferson (letter to J. Adams April 11,1823)

James Madison, fourth president and father of the Constitution, was not religious in any conventional sense. "Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise." "During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What have been its fruits? More or less in all places, pride and indolence in the Clergy, ignorance and servility in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution." From: The Madisons by Virginia Moore, P. 43 (1979, McGraw-Hill Co. New York, NY) quoting a letter by JM to William Bradford April 1, 1774, and James Madison, A Biography in his Own Words, edited by Joseph Gardner, p. 93, (1974, Newsweek, New York, NY) Quoting Memorial and Remonstrance against Religious Assessments by JM, June 1785.

Ethan Allen, whose capture of Fort Ticonderoga while commanding the Green Mountain Boys helped inspire Congress and the country to pursue the War of Independence, said, "That Jesus Christ was not God is evidence from his own words." In the same book, Allen noted that he was generally "denominated a Deist, the reality of which I never disputed, being conscious that I am no Christian." When Allen married Fanny Buchanan, he stopped his own wedding ceremony when the judge asked him if he promised "to live with Fanny Buchanan agreeable to the laws of God." Allen refused to answer until the judge agreed that the God referred to was the God of Nature, and the laws those "written in the great book of nature." From: Religion of the American Enlightenment by G. Adolph Koch, p. 40 (1968, Thomas Crowell Co., New York, NY.) quoting preface and p. 352 of Reason, the Only Oracle of Man and A Sense of History compiled by American Heritage Press Inc., p. 103 (1985, American Heritage Press, Inc., New York, NY.)

Benjamin Franklin, delegate to the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, said: As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion...has received various corrupting Changes, and I have, with most of the present dissenters in England, some doubts as to his Divinity; tho' it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an opportunity of knowing the Truth with less trouble." He died a month later, and historians consider him, like so many great Americans of his time, to be a Deist, not a Christian. From: Benjamin Franklin, A Biography in his Own Words, edited by Thomas Fleming, p. 404, (1972, Newsweek, New York, NY) quoting letter by BF to Exra Stiles March 9, 1790.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The words "In God We Trust" were not consistently on all U.S. currency until 1956, during the McCarthy Hysteria.

The Treaty of Tripoli, passed by the U.S. Senate in 1797, read in part: "The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." The treaty was written during the Washington administration, and sent to the Senate during the Adams administration. It was read aloud to the Senate, and each Senator received a printed copy. This was the 339th time that a recorded vote was required by the Senate, but only the third time a vote was unanimous (the next time was to honor George Washington). There is no record of any debate or dissension on the treaty. It was reprinted in full in three newspapers - two in Philadelphia, one in New York City. There is no record of public outcry or complaint in subsequent editions of the papers

Nowhere in the Constitution does it mention religion, except in exclusionary terms. The words Jesus Christ, Christianity, Bible, and God are never mentioned in the Constitution.

The Declaration of Independence gives us important insight into the opinions of the Founding Fathers. Thomas Jefferson wrote that the power of the government is derived from the governed. Up until that time, it was claimed that kings ruled nations by the authority of God. The Declaration was a radical departure from the idea of divine authority.

The 1796 treaty with Tripoli states that the United States was "in no sense founded on the Christian religion." They meant it. This treaty was written under the presidency of George Washington and signed under the presidency of John Adams.

None of the Founding Fathers were atheists. Most of the Founders were Deists, which is to say they thought the universe had a creator, but that he does not concern himself with the daily lives of humans, and does not directly communicate with humans, either by revelation or by sacred books. They spoke often of God, (Nature's God or the God of Nature), but this was not the God of the bible. They did not deny that there was a person called Jesus, and praised him for his benevolent teachings, but they flatly denied his divinity. Some people speculate that if Charles Darwin had lived a century earlier, the Founding Fathers would have had a basis for accepting naturalistic origins of life, and they would have been atheists. Most of them were stoutly opposed to the bible, and the teachings of Christianity in particular.

Yes, there were Christian men among the Founders. Just as Congress removed Thomas Jefferson's words that condemned the practice of slavery in the colonies, they also altered his wording regarding equal rights. His original wording is here in blue italics: "All men are created equal and independent. From that equal creation they derive rights inherent and inalienable." Congress changed that phrase, increasing its religious overtones: "All men are created equal. They are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights." But we are not governed by the Declaration of Independence-- it is a historical document, not a constitutional one.

If the Christian Right Extremists wish to return this country to its beginnings, so be it... because it was a climate of Freethought. The Founders were students of the European Enlightenment. Half a century after the establishment of the United States, clergymen complained that no president up to that date had been a Christian. In a sermon that was reported in newspapers, Episcopal minister Bird Wilson of Albany, New York, protested in October 1831: "Among all our presidents from Washington downward, not one was a professor of religion, at least not of more than Unitarianism." The attitude of the age was one of enlightened reason, tolerance, and free thought. The Founding Fathers would turn in their graves if the Christian Extremists had their way with this country.

Consider this: IF indeed the members of the First Continental Congress were all bible-believing, "God-fearing" men, would there ever have been a revolution at all?

"For rebellion as is the sin of witchcraft." 1 Samuel, 15:23

Would they have initiated a rebellion if indeed they thought it was equal to witchcraft (a crime punishable by death)? But that's only the tip of the iceberg. The New Testament gives clear instructions to Christians on how to behave when ruled under a monarchy, as were the Founders.

1 Peter 2:13: "For the Lord's sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right."

Paul wrote in Romans 13:1: "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resist authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment."

The Founders clearly did not heed what was written in the bible. If they were in fact "good" Christians, there would never have been an American Revolution. Compare the above passages with the Declaration of Independence:

"...when a long train of abuses and usurpations... evinces a design to reduce (the people) under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security..."

Anyone who can think for themselves can see that the Founders were not Christians.

The Masonic Founding of The USA

The Masonic Founding of The USA
The Masonic Founding of The United States of America

by Alexander S. Holub

The next time you hear from some fundamentalist Christian talking about how the United States of America was founded by a group of church-going Christians, as the fundamentalists claim they are, think about this:

The revolution against England was NOT a popular idea. Most people in The Colonies were quite happy with the way things were going. The people who were concerned about the taxes were those who would have to pay the majority of the taxes: the wealthy, the factories, and the shop owners. The majority of people in this country worked either for themselves or for someone else. The Boston Tea Party, you will recall, occurred because of the tax on tea. The fact of the matter is that most of the people in The Colonies didn't drink tea. It was mainly the wealthy who retained that habit. It was, though, symbolic for the continued taxing to pay for the British nobility's excesses. Fundamentalist Christians have this mistaken idea that when The Declaration of Independence was signed, everyone stood in line to sign it. Actually, it took over 5 years for everyone to sign it. That was well after the Revolutionary War was won. Part of the problem was transportation the other part was that many of the signers weren't sure that breaking away from England was the best thing to do. After all, England was the greatest military and naval power in the world and their protection was an asset. So what if they taxed The Colonies? The taxes were necessary for having the British military and navy ready to defend them.

Now, what about the Founding Fathers of the United States?

Something like 98% of the Founding Fathers of the United States were MASONS. Their main religious affiliation was UNITARIAN. The rest were either Catholic or Church of England. If you will look at the Masonic rolls of Boston (MA), New York (NY), Philadelphia (PA), Richmond (VA) and a dozen other cities lining the east coast, it reads like a Who's Who in American History. Many of the historical figures who came to help The Colonies in their break from England (e.g. Lafayette from France and Polaski from Poland) were also Masons. In fact, many of the officers who were fighting on the British side were also Masons. Masons, at that time, were DEISTS. A deist is one who believes that a God created the world but that same God doesn't interfere with it. Most Christians are theists. A theist sees God interfering with or can interfere with what's happening in the world. (This isn't any different than the Pagans who believed that the gods interfered with the lives of humans.) In other words, the Founding Fathers of this country saw that what happens here was up to them. It wasn't God's will that The Colonies break away from England. It wasn't God's will that there be a United States of America. Nor was Manifest Destiny God's will. It wasn't God's will that the United States eventually become a world power.

The Masonic tradition at that time was highly steeped in OCCULTISM. The Masons were all practicing CEREMONIAL MAGICIANS. George Washington, wearing a Masonic apron, actually performed a Masonic (occult) rite when the cornerstone of the capital was laid and he placed a box containing Masonic medallions in that cornerstone. The signing of the Declaration of Independence was based on astrological timing worked out by one of the Founding Fathers. July 4th, 1776 at 12:00 noon at Philadelphia (PA) was very significant. That very time is when John Hancock placed his signature on the Declaration. They wanted to make sure that all of the "signs" were propitious for this infant country. Would Christians go to this trouble? Absolutely NOT! Consequently, the United States was founded by occultists based on occult principles.

The Founding Fathers did NOT care for people who would manipulate The Bible for their own purposes. Their disdain for manipulative Christian religious philosophies and manipulative preachers is well-documented. People like Jerry Fallwell, Billy Graham, Oral Roberts, Kenneth Copeland, Gene Scott, Jimmy Swaggart, Peter Popov, Benny Hinn, and others of their ilk would bring out their anger. Read the works of Thomas Paine ("Common Sense") and Thomas Jefferson. (Fundamentalists conveniently over-look Jefferson's scathing attacks on these kinds of preachers.) Jefferson, himself, was so angry with these kinds of philosophies and people that he even wrote his own version of The Bible. The Bible that George Washington and many of the presidents took the oath of office on was, in fact, a Masonic Bible. That Bible is now in the Smithsonian.

The Masonic tradition at that time was a powerful influence on the world. For centuries just about every Pope, Cardinal, Bishop, nobleman, the royalty, and many generals were Masons. Many important people were also Masons. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons, was a Mason, as were many of the Baroque and Classical composers. Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and more than half of the U.S. presidents were Masons. It was in the middle of the 19th century that THE CHURCH condemned the Masonic tradition and said they were all a bunch of devil worshippers. After The Church's condemnation of the Masonic tradition, the manipulative branches of Christianity took up the banner (even though they see The Catholic Church as in league with the devil) because it aided them in their cause " control of the masses.

Another thing you need to consider is that the principles upon which The United States was founded upon were, by and large, NOT Christian principles. Freedom of religion is definitely not a Christian principle. Nor is the right to vote a Christian principle. Free education for everyone is also not a Christian ideal. Also excluded are freedom of speech, press, or assembly. But then, slavery was permitted by Christianity (see Eph. 6:5) and this verse was used by, what were, the Southern fundamentalists of the time. In essence, the rights of the individual were NOT Christian but were Masonic ideals.

It's time that the facts be presented. Most people will not take the time to research and find the truth. Fundamentalists are always going around talking about The Truth, but when they are confronted by it they refuse to accept it. There are two types of ignorance: The first type of ignorance is that brought about by nature where an individual doesn't have the mental capacities to seek and/or understand it. The second type of ignorance is chosen ignorance. This is the byword of fundamentalist Christianity. Through half-truths (half-truths are whole lies), purposeful semantic manipulations, and feigned knowledge and wisdom they "trap(ped) you with gile (lies)" (as Paul said to the Corinthians). The Truth is out there. You need to find it for yourself. No one has it for you.

Benjamin Franklin, delegate to the Continental Congress and the Constitutional Convention, said:
As to Jesus of Nazareth, my Opinion of whom you particularly desire, I think the System of Morals and his Religion...has received various corrupting Changes, and I have, with most of the present dissenters in England, some doubts as to his Divinity; tho' it is a question I do not dogmatize upon, having never studied it, and think it needless to busy myself with it now, when I expect soon an opportunity of knowing the Truth with less trouble." He died a month later, and historians consider him, like so many great Americans of his time, to be a Deist, not a Christian.

Speaking of the independence of the first 13 States, H.G. Wells in his Outline of History, says:

"It was a Western European civilization that had broken free from the last traces of Empire and Christendom; and it had not a vestige of monarchy left, and no State Religion... The absence of any binding religious tie is especially noteworthy. It had a number of forms of Christianity, its spirit was indubitably Christian; but, as a State document of 1796 expicity declared: 'The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion.'"

The words "In God We Trust" were not consistently on all U.S. currency until 1956, during the McCarthy Hysteria.

There is no record of public outcry or complaint in subsequent editions of the papers.

The Ohio Recount Will Go Forward

The Ohio Recount Will Go Forward

The Ohio Recount Will Go Forward
by John Bonifaz

John C. Bonifaz, founder and general counsel of the National Voting Rights Institute, presented this speech before the "Fight for Democracy" rally in Columbus, Ohio, on December 4, 2004:

We serve as co-counsel for presidential candidates David Cobb and Michael Badnarik in their demand for a full recount of all votes cast in Ohio for President in the 2004 general election.

In a democracy, votes must count and every citizen's vote must be properly counted. We are here today to fight for our right to vote. We are here today to fight for the United States Constitution. We are here today to fight for the promise of democracy.

Our clients, David Cobb and Michael Badnarik, have demanded a full recount of all of the votes cast in Ohio for President in the 2004 election. They are standing up for all of us to help ensure a proper counting of the votes and to protect the integrity of our electoral process. We at the National Voting Rights Institute are proud to represent them, along with voters across the state and Common Cause/Ohio in support of the recount.

But certain election officials are standing in our way.

Under Ohio state law, candidates Cobb and Badnarik are entitled to seek a recount provided that they post the necessary bonds to help pay for it. People throughout this state and this nation have contributed the required $113,000 for the posting of the bonds. Candidates Cobb and Badnarik have a right to this recount. We, as a people, have a right to this recount.

But certain election officials are standing in our way.

Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell is actively engaged in thwarting the recount law. He is doing everything in his power to deny our clients from having a meaningful and timely recount. We stand here today on December the 4th, a full 32 days after the November 2nd election, and Mr. Blackwell has yet to certify the statewide results of this election. Thirty-two days - no certification. The Ohio recount law states that candidates shall file their requests for a recount within five days after the Secretary certifies the statewide results. Mr. Blackwell knows that, which is why he is delaying his certification until this Monday, December 6. On December 7, his office says he will be sending out certificates to the presidential electors for their casting of the votes at the Electoral College on December 13. These dates are created by federal statute. Mr. Blackwell knows that. He is intentionally allowing no time for a recount to occur before he sends out the certificates to the presidential electors on December 7 and before the Electoral College meets on December 13. Mr. Blackwell, who also serves as chair of the Bush-Cheney campaign in Ohio, is doing everything he can to push through a slate of electors based on an untested, initial count of the vote.

He must be stopped. The federal judiciary has sadly refused to intervene. The federal courts recognize that the candidates have a right to a recount. We will have our recount. But while the courts will not expedite this recount process, we have a message today for Mr. Blackwell:

In the name of democracy, in the name of the right to vote, in the name of the Constitution, let the recount process proceed to its completion before you send the certificates to the presidential electors. Let the recount process proceed to its completion before the Electoral College meets. Let the recount process proceed to its completion prior to the casting of Ohio's Electoral College votes.

Presidential electors serve a term of office. It is a one day term. They show up to meet to cast their state's electoral votes in the Electoral College. They derive their power from the people of each state. They represent the will of the voters.

If a recount process is proceeding, by definition, the will of the voters remains undetermined. No presidential elector has the right to assume his or her term of office until a final determination of the vote count is made. And no secretary of state has the right to certify the presidential electors until a final determination of the vote count is made. In a democracy, votes must count.

So, let me be clear here. Let me be clear. We will have a recount in this state. That recount process will begin immediately after Mr. Blackwell certifies the statewide results on Monday. And even if, even if the Electoral College meets on December 13, the recount process will proceed. And if, at the end of the recount process, it is determined that a different set of presidential electors should be representing the people of Ohio, that set of electors will meet and will cast their votes for President. And if that happens, the United States Congress will receive the votes of two competing sets of presidential electors from the state of Ohio when it convenes on January 6, 2005, to formally receive the Electoral College votes. One slate will be chosen by Mr. Blackwell. The other will be chosen by the will of the people of Ohio. We will have a recount. And the fight will go on.

Yesterday, the federal district court in Columbus denied the Delaware County Board of Elections and the Delaware County prosecutor their demand for an injunction to stop the recount in that county. The court recognized the candidates' right to a recount. We will fight any effort by any election official in this state who seeks to defy the law and deny our clients' right to a full recount of all votes cast for President in the 2004 election. We stand with you in this fight for democracy. Please visit our website, DefendTheRecount.org. Join our legal defense fund. Sign up for updates on the legal fight. We need you to help make this fight possible. DefendTheRecount.org

Mahatma Gandhi once said:

First, they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win.

They are no longer ignoring us. They are no longer laughing at us. They are fighting us now. And we're going to win. The right to vote will win. The Constitution will win. Democracy will win. Count every vote.

President Bush Tuesday admitted training Iraqi forces to replace American forces is not going as planned.
As the U.S. combat death toll in Iraq reached 1,000 since last year's invasion with a record monthly toll in November of 136, Bush said he expected a tough road ahead.

While a recent offensive in Falluja "dealt the enemy a severe blow," Bush said the insurgents who used the city as their stronghold would "keep on fighting" and offered a more cautious assessment of the readiness of Iraqi troops than he had in the past.

Classified CIA assessments, disclosed on Tuesday, said the situation was deteriorating and unlikely to improve any time soon.

"Some Iraqi units have performed better than others," Bush told thousands of camouflage-clad Marines flanked by giant American flags and heavily armed Humvees at Camp Pendleton, CA. "Some Iraqis have been intimidated enough by the insurgents to leave the service to their country."

But Bush said "a great many are standing firm," and the United States would continue training Iraqi security forces "so the Iraqi people can eventually take responsibility for their own security."

He touted a new NATO training program and said efforts were underway to "develop a core of well-trained senior and mid-level Iraqi officers" to lead the new forces.

Bush did not repeat his assertions from September about nearly 100,000 "fully trained and equipped" Iraqi soldiers, police officers and other security personnel being on the job.

Bush said his goal was to "help the Iraqi government build a force that no longer needs coalition support so they can defend their own nation. And then American soldiers and Marines can come home."

NO TIMETABLE FOR PULLOUT

But Bush offered no timetables one day after Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he hoped U.S. troops would be pulled out of Iraq in the next four years.

The White House said Bush's California visit was part of an effort to boost U.S. troop morale. He flew more than nine hours round-trip from Washington to give a 30-minute speech at Camp Pendleton, which has had one of the highest casualty rates in Iraq of any U.S. military base.

After his speech, Bush sat down to a lunch of pasta, rice and beef in the mess hall, and met with more than 50 families of fallen soldiers.

The Pentagon announced last week it would increase the number of American troops in Iraq to 150,000, from 138,000, to try to improve security for elections at the end of January.

The move will extend the promised yearlong Iraq tours of 8,100 Army soldiers to 14 months and the seven-month tours of 2,300 Marines to nine months.

In a sign of growing tension, eight U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq and Kuwait filed a lawsuit this week over a military policy that forces them to serve beyond their enlistment contracts.

Citing the temporary increase in troop strength, Bush said he had "a strategy in place to aid the rise of a stable democracy in Iraq, to help the Iraqi government provide security during the election period."

Bush has vowed to press ahead with Jan. 30 elections in Iraq despite the surge in violence.

"As election day approaches, we can expect further violence from the terrorists," Bush said, adding: "Free elections will proceed as planned."

He said the elections would undercut the insurgency because "when Iraqis choose new leaders in free elections, it will destroy the myth that the terrorists are fighting a foreign occupation and make clear that what the terrorists are really fighting is the will of the Iraqi people."

3,000 page bill passage mirrors first Patriot Act sneak-through

Related: Emergency Alert: National ID/Patriot Act 2 Legislation On Verge Of Passing

UPDATE: December 7th at 7:38 p.m.
The U.S. House passed the conference report on the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act by a vote of 336 "ayes" to 75 "noes." Vote Tally

****************

December 7, 2004

If you were a member of Congress, would you vote "yes" on a 3,000 page bill that you never had a chance to read? Most reasonable people wouldn't. Most reasonable people would want to read and study legislation before deciding how to vote; especially legislation as monumental as the intelligence reorganization legislation or the so-called 9/11 bill.

And monumental it is. The legislation would greatly affect various intelligence and military agencies and procedures; financial systems; international relations; not to mention civil liberties. In addition, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the legislation will cost $14.4 billion to implement between 2005 and 2009. That's $14.4 billion on top of the normal annual budgets for the various governmental agencies involved.

Yet this monumental legislation will be voted on by members of Congress without those members having had time to read, let alone study, the bill. It's just after 2:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, December 7th. The U.S. House is expected to vote on the 9/11 bill sometime today or tomorrow. But at this moment, there isn't a copy of the final bill available for House members to read.

So, is there a provision in the bill to establish a national ID? No one seems to know. Or at least the people who do know aren't saying. What else is in the bill that the select few in Washington are keeping secret? Who knows? Anything could be...and that's the point.

Remember how passage of the Patriot Act was handled? Members had only two to three hours to read the final 400-page bill before they had to cast their vote. The legislation that created the Department of Homeland Security was handled in the same way.

So, here we go again. Everyone is talking about this monumental legislation as if they've read it. News reporters, commentators, political analysts, think tanks; 9/11 families; and yes, members of Congress are busy sounding off as experts trying to convince the American public that Congress should pass it. Have any of these people actually read it? Their opinions are just based upon someone else's opinions that are based upon other people's opinions and so on.

The House version of the intelligence reorganization bill is in two volumes. Volume 1 is 1,778 pages. Volume 2 is 1,586 pages. How many pages are in the final conference report and what exactly has been added or deleted at the last minute? Well, as of 2:00 p.m. ET, the final report is not available for members to read. But the vote on that enormous bill will be held within hours.

We urge a "no" vote because we believe the bill has a national ID provision in it. In addition, we urge a "no" vote, simply because members of Congress should know what the bill says in print before voting on it.

Take action now. The bill still has to pass the Senate on Wednesday. Call your Senators by using the switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Find your Senators at http://www.senate.gov

Secret Patriot Act II to give Hitler's Powers to Bush

Secret Patriot Act II to give Hitler's Powers to Bush

Secret Patriot Act II to give Hitler's Powers to Bush
Infowars.com
December 8, 2004

Alex wrote this back in 2003 and it won second place from Project Censored. We're glad that this story is still circulating -- it is as important and timely as ever. Now, the National ID Card and Patriot Act II have passed the house and is in the Senate.

Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tex) told the Washington Times
that no member of Congress was allowed to read the
first Patriot Act that was passed by the House on
October 27, 2001. The first Patriot Act was
universally decried by civil libertarians and
Constitutional SECRET PATscholars from across the
political spectrum. William Safire, while writing for
the New York Times, described the first Patriot Act's
powers by saying that President Bush was seizing
dictatorial control.

On February 7, 2003 the Center for Public Integrity, a
non-partisan public interest think-tank in DC,
revealed the full text of the Domestic Security
Enhancement Act of 2003. The classified document had
been leaked to them by an unnamed source inside the
Federal government. The document consisted of a
33-page section by section analysis of the
accompanying 87-page bill.

The Patriot Act II bill itself is stamped
"Confidential -Not for Distribution." Upon reading the
analysis and bill, I was stunned by the scientifically
crafted tyranny contained in the legislation. The
Justice Department Office of Legislative Affairs
admits that they had indeed covertly transmitted a
copy of the legislation to Speaker of the House Dennis
Hastert, (R-Il) and the Vice President of the United
States, Dick Cheney as well as the executive heads of
federal law enforcement agencies.

It is important to note that no member of Congress was
allowed to see the first Patriot Act before its
passage, and that no debate was tolerated by the House
and Senate leadership. The intentions of the White
House and Speaker Hastert concerning Patriot Act II
appear to be a carbon copy replay of the events that
led to the unprecedented passage of the first Patriot
Act.

There are two glaring areas that need to be looked at
concerning this new legislation:

1. The secretive tactics being used by the White House
and Speaker Hastert to keep even the existence of this
legislation secret would be more at home in Communist
China than in the United States. The fact that Dick
Cheney publicly managed the steamroller passage of the
first Patriot Act, insuring that no one was allowed to
read it and publicly threatening members of Congress
that if they didn?t vote in favor of it that they
would be blamed for the next terrorist attack, is by
the White House?' own definition terrorism. The move
to clandestinely craft and then bully passage of any
legislation by the Executive Branch is clearly an
impeachable offence.

2. The second Patriot Act is a mirror image of powers
that Julius Caesar and Adolf Hitler gave themselves.
Whereas the First Patriot Act only gutted the First,
Third, Fourth and Fifth Amendments, and seriously
damaged the Seventh and the Tenth, the Second Patriot
Act reorganizes the entire Federal government as well
as many areas of state government under the
dictatorial control of the Justice Department, the
Office of Homeland Security and the FEMA NORTHCOM
military command. The Domestic Security Enhancement
Act 2003, also known as the Second Patriot Act is by
its very structure the definition of dictatorship.

I challenge all Americans to study the new Patriot Act
and to compare it to the Constitution, Bill of Rights
and Declaration of Independence. Ninety percent of the
act has nothing to do with terrorism and is instead a
giant Federal power-grab with tentacles reaching into
every facet of our society. It strips American
citizens of all of their rights and grants the
government and its private agents total immunity.

Here is a quick thumbnail sketch of just some of the
draconian measures encapsulated within this tyrannical
legislation:

SECTION 501 (Expatriation of Terrorists) expands the
Bush administration'?s enemy combatant definition to
all American citizens who may have violated any
provision of Section 802 of the first Patriot Act.
(Section 802 is the new definition of domestic
terrorism, and the definition is any action that
endangers human life that is a violation of any
Federal or State law. ) Section 501 of the second
Patriot Act directly connects to Section 125 of the
same act. The Justice Department boldly claims that
the incredibly broad Section 802 of the First USA
Patriot Act isn?t broad enough and that a new,
unlimited definition of terrorism is needed.

Under Section 501 a US citizen engaging in lawful
activities can be grabbed off the street and thrown
into a van never to be seen again. The Justice
Department states that they can do this because the
person had inferred from conduct that they were not a
US citizen. Remember Section 802 of the First USA
Patriot Act states that any violation of Federal or
State law can result in the enemy combatant terrorist
designation.

SECTION 201 of the second Patriot Act makes it a
criminal act for any member of the government or any
citizen to release any information concerning the
incarceration or whereabouts of detainees. It also
states that law enforcement does not even have to tell
the press who they have arrested and they never have
to release the names.

SECTION 301 and 306 (Terrorist Identification
Database) set up a national database of suspected
terrorists and radically expand the database to
include anyone associated with suspected terrorist
groups and anyone involved in crimes or having
supported any group designated as terrorist. These
sections also set up a national DNA database for
anyone on probation or who has been on probation for
any crime, and orders State governments to collect the
DNA for the Federal government.

SECTION 312 gives immunity to law enforcement engaging
in spying operations against the American people and
would place substantial restrictions on court
injunctions against Federal violations of civil rights
across the board.

SECTION 101 will designate individual terrorists as
foreign powers and again strip them of all rights
under the enemy combatant designation.

SECTION 102 states clearly that any information
gathering, regardless of whether or not those
activities are illegal, can be considered to be
clandestine intelligence activities for a foreign
power. This makes news gathering illegal.

SECTION 103 allows the Federal government to use
wartime martial law powers domestically and
internationally without Congress declaring that a
state of war exists.

SECTION 106 is bone-chilling in its
straightforwardness. It states that broad general
warrants by the secret FSIA court (a panel of secret
judges set up in a star chamber system that convenes
in an undisclosed location) granted under the first
Patriot Act are not good enough. It states that
government agents must be given immunity for carrying
out searches with no prior court approval. This
section throws out the entire Fourth Amendment against
unreasonable searches and seizures.

SECTION 109 allows secret star chamber courts to issue
contempt charges against any individual or corporation
who refuses to incriminate themselves or others. This
sections annihilate the last vestiges of the Fifth
Amendment.

SECTION 110 restates that key police state clauses in
the first Patriot Act were not sunsetted and removes
the five year sunset clause from other subsections of
the first Patriot Act. After all, the media has told
us: this is the New America. Get used to it. This is
forever.

SECTION 111 expands the definition of the enemy
combatant designation.

SECTION 122 restates the government?s newly announced
power of surveillance without a court order.

SECTION 123 restates that the government no longer
needs warrants and that the investigations can be a
giant dragnet-style sweep described in press reports
about the Total Information Awareness Network. One
passage reads, thus the focus of domestic surveillance
may be less precise than that directed against more
conventional types of crime.

SECTION 126 grants the government the right to mine
the entire spectrum of public and private sector
information from bank records to educational and
medical records. This is the enacting law to allow
ECHELON and the Total Information Awareness Network to
totally break down any and all walls of privacy.

The government states that they must look at
everything to determine if individuals or groups might
have a connection to terrorist groups. As you can now
see, you are guilty until proven innocent.

SECTION 127 allows the government to takeover
coroners? and medical examiners operations whenever
they see fit.

SECTION 128 allows the Federal government to place gag
orders on Federal and State Grand Juries and to take
over the proceedings. It also disallows individuals or
organizations to even try to quash a Federal subpoena.
So now defending yourself will be a terrorist action.

SECTION 129 destroys any remaining whistleblower
protection for Federal agents.

SECTION 202 allows corporations to keep secret their
activities with toxic biological, chemical or
radiological materials.

SECTION 205 allows top Federal officials to keep all
their financial dealings secret, and anyone
investigating them can be considered a terrorist. This
should be very useful for Dick Cheney to stop anyone
investigating Haliburton.

SECTION 303 sets up national DNA database of suspected
terrorists. The database will also be used to stop
other unlawful activities. It will share the
information with state, local and foreign agencies for
the same purposes.

SECTION 311 federalizes your local police department
in the area of information sharing.

SECTION 313 provides liability protection for
businesses, especially big businesses that spy on
their customers for Homeland Security, violating their
privacy agreements. It goes on to say that these are
all preventative measures â?? has anyone seen Minority
Report? This is the access hub for the Total
Information Awareness Network.

SECTION 321 authorizes foreign governments to spy on
the American people and to share information with
foreign governments.

SECTION 322 removes Congress from the extradition
process and allows officers of the Homeland Security
complex to extradite American citizens anywhere they
wish. It also allows Homeland Security to secretly
take individuals out of foreign countries.

SECTION 402 is titled Providing Material Support to
Terrorism. The section reads that there is no
requirement to show that the individual even had the
intent to aid terrorists.

SECTION 403 expands the definition of weapons of mass
destruction to include any activity that affects
interstate or foreign commerce.

SECTION 404 makes it a crime for a terrorist or other
criminals to use encryption in the commission of a
crime.

SECTION 408 creates lifetime parole (basically,
slavery) for a whole host of crimes.

SECTION 410 creates no statute of limitations for
anyone that engages in terrorist actions or supports
terrorists. Remember: any crime is now considered
terrorism under the first Patriot Act.

SECTION 411 expands crimes that are punishable by
death. Again, they point to Section 802 of the first
Patriot Act and state that any terrorist act or
support of terrorist act can result in the death
penalty.

SECTION 421 increases penalties for terrorist
financing. This section states that any type of
financial activity connected to terrorism will result
to time in prison and $10-50,000 fines per violation.

SECTIONS 427 sets up asset forfeiture provisions for
anyone engaging in terrorist activities.

There are many other sections that I did not cover in
the interest of time. The American people were shocked
by the despotic nature of the first Patriot Act. The
second Patriot Act dwarfs all police state legislation
in modern world history.

Usually, corrupt governments allow their citizens lots
of wonderful rights on paper, while carrying out their
jackbooted oppression covertly. From snatch and grab
operations to warantless searches, Patriot Act II is
an Adolf Hitler wish list.

You can understand why President Bush, Dick Cheney and
Dennis Hastert want to keep this legislation secret
not just from Congress, but the American people as
well. Bill Allison, Managing Editor of the Center for
Public Integrity, the group that broke this story,
stated on my radio show that it was obvious that they
were just waiting for another terrorist attack to
opportunistically get this new bill through. He then
shocked me with an insightful comment about how the
Federal government was crafting this so that they
could go after the American people in general. He also
agreed that the FBI has been quietly demonizing
patriots and Christians and those who carry around
pocket Constitutions.

I have produced two documentary films and written a
book about what really happened on September 11th. The
bottom line is this: the military-industrial complex
carried the attacks out as a pretext for control.
Anyone who doubts this just hasn?t looked at the
mountains of hard evidence.

Of course, the current group of white collar criminals
in the White House might not care that we?'re finding
out the details of their next phase. Because, after
all, when smallpox gets released, or more buildings
start blowing up, the President can stand up there at
his lectern suppressing a smirk, squeeze out a tear or
two, and tell us that See I was right. I had to take
away your rights to keep you safe. And now it?s your
fault that all of these children are dead. From that
point on, anyone who criticizes tyranny will be
shouted down by the paid talking head government
mouthpieces in the mainstream media.

You have to admit, it?s a beautiful script.
Unfortunately, it?s being played out in the real
world. If we don?t get the word out that government is
using terror to control our lives while doing nothing
to stop the terrorists, we will deserve what we get -
tyranny. But our children won?t deserve it.

Former President Says Schwarzenegger's going to be President

Senior Bush Suggests That Schwarzenegger Could Someday Become President

National campaign intensifies into sixth week.

Arnold Exposed.com | December 1, 2004

As Arnold's thinly-disguised campaign intensifies, ninety-nine percent of the media coverage is pro-Arnold for President.

Arnold Exposed.com has gotten one 20 second report on CNN. Meanwhile, Arnold's front group has been on every news show known to man, in many cases multiple times.

The lavish coverage is perpetual and is, in reality, nothing more than the launch of his Presidential campaign by the establishment media.

Print and radio outlets have given Americans Against Arnold coverage, and we've gotten over 5 million visitors to Arnold Exposed.com. The TV news outlets, however, that we have contacted simply tell us "they'll get back with us." Then, the next day, we see Morgenthaler-Jones of the terminate-the Constitution crowd on their show.

Depending on what national poll you look at, eighty to sixty percent of Americans are against amending the Constitution for Schwarzenegger or anyone else. Why, then, won't the media cover what we're doing?

Maria Schriver is playing her usual role of defense in telling Vanity Fair that she's sure the Constitution will be changed for a foreigner, but it won't be Arnold . This is just like when she said Arnold would not run for governor. Her transparent cover allows Arnold to continue running his Presidential campaign while denying it exists.

We warned you, he's not playing games. While in Texas getting his award from George H. W. Bush he then went on to a fundraiser to get $20,000 a plate for some unnamed campaign.

Take this seriously and please help us get the word out.

Governor Receives Bush Award
Senior Bush suggests that Schwarzenegger could someday become president

Houston Chronicle | November 30, 2004

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Former President George H.W. Bush presented Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger an award for public service on Tuesday and suggested that the foreign-born, former action movie star could someday be elected president.

"In regard to him ever being president of the United States, my advice to you Aggies and to any of those doubters, don't bet against Arnold Schwarzenegger," Bush told about 2,500 people attending the award ceremony at Texas A&M University.

The former president didn't endorse Schwarzenegger for the nation's highest office. But he obliquely referred to recent discussions about amending the U.S. Constitution to allow a foreign-born citizen to be president. Schwarzenegger, who was born in Austria, currently is ineligible for the White House, but Bush said people have been underestimating him during his entire career -- as a bodybuilder, actor and now governor.

Schwarzenegger tried to downplay the presidential speculation about himself, but he said immigrants should have the opportunity to run for the office.

"I like the opportunity," he replied, eliciting much laughter, when an immigrant-questioner in the audience said he didn't believe immigrants should be president.

"Of course, not because of me. I only have an interest to fix California," the governor added. "But I think that if someone lives here a period of time ... and votes and all that and makes good contributions to the country, I think someone should have the right to also run for president."

He called the debate over a constitutional amendment a "very interesting discussion, and I hope the discussion will go on in the future in this country."

A Silicon Valley group has launched a Web site and sponsored TV commercials promoting a constitutional amendment that would benefit a Schwarzenegger presidential bid. The governor has tried to distance himself from the group. But he has been traveling extensively outside of California and, according to one newspaper report, organizers of the "Amend for Arnold" movement say he has privately given them encouragement.

Schwarzenegger campaigned for President George W. Bush during this fall's White House race. He also campaigned for former President Bush and chaired his Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Schwarzenegger said the former president wrote him a letter encouraging him to run for California governor a year ago, when the former actor unseated Democrat Gray Davis in a recall election. Despite lingering budgetary problems, Schwarzenegger remains hugely popular in the state.

The former president presented Schwarzenegger the 2004 George Bush Award for "excellence in public service" and praised the governor for his dreams and his perseverance.

"Arnold is not afraid to dream big, and he's put in the hard work to make that dream into a reality," Bush said.

"He's embraced the idea of public service as a noble calling," he added.

Previous recipients of the award include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., the uncle of Schwarzenegger's wife, Maria Shriver.

The governor joked that Kennedy wanted to attend Tuesday's ceremony but couldn't.

"Thanksgiving was only five days ago, and he's still working on his dinner," Schwarzenegger quipped.

The honoree also joked that the award was a "presidential pardon for my bad movies."

The governor praised the former president for his career of public service.

He said Bush was "not only my hero but he's also my mentor and my teacher."

A constitutional amendment allowing Schwarzenegger or any other foreign-born citizen to run for president would require a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress and ratification by 38 states.

And when we publish, we do it in a timely fashion. Better, I say, to be surprised by your newspaper in October than to learn in November that your newspaper has betrayed you by withholding the truth.

: US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld came under fire from American troops over their safety in Iraq, as Secretary of State Colin Powell urged Europe to look beyond differences over last year's invasion.

In the British parliament, Prime Minister Tony Blair rejected a call for an independent inquiry into civilian deaths in Iraq, saying "terrorists and insurgents" were to blame for fatalities in the run-up to January 30 elections.

American troops waiting in the Kuwaiti desert to enter Iraq challenged Rumsfeld about their safety.

About 1,800 of the 10,000 troops at Camp Buehring, near the Iraqi border, gathered to hear the US defence chief say Iraqis will have to take over their own security to allow foreign troops to leave after the elections.

But one soldier was loudly cheered as he told Rumsfeld soldiers were "digging through landfills" to find scrap metal to reinforce the hundreds of US trucks and other military vehicles that pour into Iraq each day.

"Our vehicles are not armoured. We are digging up pieces of rusting scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass that has already been shot up, dropped, busted, picking the best for our vehicles to take into combat," he complained.

After a brief lull following last month's US-led assault to defeat insurgents in the city of Fallujah, violence has continued with the number of US military personnel killed in action since the invasion now about 1,000.

On the diplomatic front, ahead of meetings at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Powell said Washington and Europe had to come together to respond to new threats and challenges.

"I know that some of (President George W. Bush's) key decisions these last four years have been controversial in Europe, especially decisions that were made about Iraq," he said in a speech.

"Whatever our differences about the past, about Iraq, we are now looking forward," Powell said. "We are reaching out to Europe and we hope that Europe will reach out to us."

Iraq's interim President Ghazi al-Yawar, in an interview with the Washington Post published Wednesday, accused Iran of meddling in the election process.

Iran was coaching candidates sympathetic to Tehran and pouring "huge amounts of money" into the Iraqi election campaign in the hope of producing a loyal Shiite-dominated government in Baghdad, said Yawar.

"Iran has very obvious interference in our business -- a lot of money, a lot of intelligence activities and almost interfering daily ... especially in the southeast side of Iraq," said Yawar.

Two days before registration for the candicacies closes, four Sunni political movements have registered for the vote, although close to 70 Sunni organisations have threatened a boycott.

In Britain, 46 influential figures, including a number of former British ambassadors, urged Blair in a letter made public Wednesday to agree to an inquiry into civilian deaths.

Their appeal was prompted by a study published in British medical journal The Lancet which estimated the death toll in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion at around 100,000.

During weekly question time in parliament, Blair rejected the need for an independent probe, indicating that he put his faith in data from the Iraqi health ministry.

British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, meanwhile, was visiting British forces in the southern city of Basra, just days after a battle group returned from a controversial deployment near Baghdad.

Hoon was meeting members of the Scottish Black Watch regiment whose 850-member battle group returned to base Saturday after a controversial month-long deployment which left five of their members dead.

He said it was "reasonable to expect an increase (in militant attacks) ahead of elections" but that there was "no reason for elections not to take place" on time.

He also refused to rule out further British troop deployments to Iraq.

Britain has about 8,500 troops in relatively calm southern Iraq, around Basra, compared to 138,000 US troops in the centre and north. The ministry of defence indicated that Hoon's visit would last several days.

Another high-profile visitor on Wednesday was South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun who briefly met some of Seoul's contingent in the northern Kurdish town of Arbil.

Bulgaria, another member of the US-led multinational force in Iraq, will decide in January whether to keep its troops in the war-wracked country, Defense Minister Nikolai Svinarov told AFP in an interview.

Bulgaria's former communist Socialists, the main opposition party to the centre-right government, have called for Sofia to withdraw its 450 troops from Iraq after the elections.

Violence continued to simmer on the ground with at least one policeman killed in an attack by armed men against a police station in Samarra, north of Baghdad, and three people wounded in a bomb blast in the Iraqi capital.

Police said gunmen killed an Iraqi truck driver transporting goods for US troops in the northern village of Al-Ouja, the birthplace of ousted president Saddam Hussein.

The Al-Qaeda linked militant group Ansar Al-Sunna, meanwhile, threatened in an Internet video that it would soon kill a Turkish hostage it said was working for a company under contract to US forces.

HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE 2004 ELECTIONS

Wife Swap- The Microcosm of the 2004 Election

Since the 2004 election, we have seen the pundits discuss and postulate how
to explain what happened in the 2004 election. Democrats have gone over
how they can recapture the votes they have lost in the last two elections.

I was watching that ABC "Wife Swap" show as I have often done,
and it suddenly dawned on me that what we see on that show, is exactly
the Republican vs. Democrat election, in microcosm.

The dynamic of the show is that the mother/wife of one family, is swapped
with the mother/wife of another family. The tension of the show comes from
the fact that the producers choose families who lead, almost diametrically
opposing lifestyles. To simplify it, usually they pick a laid back, liberal family
who care more about freedom and honesty and personal evolution, as opposed
to a very rigid, conservative, closed minded family in which there is a dominating
male figure who is overbearing and arrogant.

The "Republican" family is clear...they are the ones who are intolerant, close-minded,
anti-gay, anti-liberation type folks...and just incidentally, usually have a strong Southern
accent to their speech. But, of course, it is not just the Yankees vs. the Rebels...but it certainly
is the standoff between those people who believe that everyone should adhere to a very
rigid, conservative value system and lifestyle, and who are intolerant of other folk's views...as opposed to the more freedom loving, liberal families.

What I have noticed is that the children of the "Republican" type families, when they are exposed to
a "new mom" who is more liberal, more friendly, more expressive and who wants to promote the
personal freedom and cultivation of the kids, are very enthusiastic about the new way of doing.

The kids who have the repressive Republican mother inflicted on them, rebel at the attempts to
clamp down on their freedom.

I've also noted that, by and large, the "Democratic" husband, is more amiable and ready to go
along with the changes the "Republican" wife imposes, but the "Republican" husband, will
outright rebel against any change in the lifestyle and will just blatantly refuse to go along with
the changes, EVEN THOUGH, to get on the show, family members have to sign an agreement
that they will go along with the rules of the show.

In fact. after you watch the program, it is very clear who would have voted for Bush, and who would have voted either for Kerry, or a third party candidate.

So, if people want to understand the 2004 election better, you really should watch WIFE SWAP on ABC.
